Ergo Release Notes
New in Ergo 0.90
- New Features:
- New init file option "game window show terminal output". When this is enabled, each time
you create a new game window the terminal output will be displayed in that window by default. (Requested by the
player formerly known as talby.)
- New command: "Insert variation as kibitz" to insert a variation into the command line as a kibitz
of the sequence of moves in the variation. Right click on a variation letter to access the command. The idea is
that while watching a game you'll play out a variation locally and then go back and send it as a kibitz. It can
be much faster (and more accurate) than trying to type it in by hand.
- Menu improvements:
- Shortcut keys have been added. It should now be possible to do most common things via the keyboard rather than
the mouse.
- Fixed some annoying bugs that caused extra lines in the menus.
- Added more items to the popup menus: Show Observers, stats black, stats white.
- Game browsing via keyboard. Use Alt (or Meta) plus the arrow keys to move forward and backward through the
game moves.
- Some commands (all, moves, time, score) now add the game number automatically when issued from a game
window.
- New matches are now displayed with the main terminal output rather than in the area where connections/disconnections
are displayed.
- Fixes:
- Some serious threading bugs that showed up under Digital Unix were fixed. (Thanks to Henry Story for the fixes!)
- SomeAdded better Japanese language support. (Thanks to Wada Hiroyuki for the fixes!)
- When terminal output is going to a game window it is now also copied to the Terminal window so that no output
is lost when the game window is closed. (Suggested by owl.)
New in Ergo 0.18
- New Features:
- Improved game status display. Easier to read, more aesthetically pleasing (to my eyes).
- Game window background color (settable in Ergo.ini file).
- Ability to save the textual output of the terminal window or game window to a file.
- Fixes:
- WING: Can now just press Enter (or Return) to see next page of help display.
- WING: Fixed bug in dealing with WING's peculiar end of line convention in some of the help files. Namely they
sometimes send \r\r\n rather than just \r\n or \n. Ergo used to display an extra blank line and strip the last
character of the line.
- WING: Beeping works.
- New bugs:
- Dragging the separator to enlarge the game window kibitz pane just moves the kibitz pane up but does not enlarge
it.
New in Ergo 0.17
- New Features:
- Simplified game titles a bit.
- New "Copy (as SGF)" menu item, copies game to clipboard in SGF format. Available via right-click
on the board or (temporarily) on the Options menu. Doesn't work in browsers, due to Java security restrictions.
- The handicap stones display uses real stone graphics rather than just drawing a circle.
- "Game Over" or "Adjourned" are displayed in red to be a bit clearer.
- Fixed:
- Tabs now display correctly (notably in the "help" command output).
- Coordinates on the game windows have been re-aligned with the lines on the goban (was only a problem in 0.15
and 0.16).
- Timing information (BL and WL) is no longer written to SGF files unless the game is timed.
- SGF files are now written a bit more compactly, with several nodes per line.
- A bug that crept into 0.16 was fixed: The final result was displayed incorrectly, and browsing backward from
it caused Ergo to get confused.
- The board bevel is now taken into account when drawing the board coordinates.
- The "Handicap" menu is now enabled at the right times.
New in Ergo 0.16
- Lighter color for the wood-grain goban.
New in Ergo 0.15
- Features:
- Realistic goban and 3-D stones as an option
- Works in Internet Explorer 4.0
- A dialog for creating a new server if the one you want isn't on the menu.
- Fixed:
- Serious bug in scoring mode that could cause some moves to be deleted.
- The decline button in the match dialog should be disabled (or removed) when the Ergo user chooses Go > Request
Match, as opposed to when they are the recipient of a match request.
- The "Games View" and "Who View" windows didn't resize correctly.
- The match dialog didn't go away when the user declined a match.
New in Ergo 0.12
- Features:
- New menu item Options > Focus on this Window lets you direct all "relevant" output to the current
game window rather than having to move back and forth between the game window and the terminal window. "Inspired
by talby."
- Added colors to text output: magenta = tell, blue = yell, green = kibitz/say, red = commands, orange = warnings.
This will be made configurable in a future release.
- Implemented the BEEP command, so if someone beeps you the bell will sound.
- Fixes:
- Improved reporting of SGF errors.
- Fixed dialogs to display multiple lines correctly.
- The "forward to kibitz" button now stops at branches. I figure this is the right thing most of the
time, but I could be convinced to make it an option.
- The move number displayed for kibitzes is now correct even when the kibitz arrives while you're browsing, or
when using the localkibitz ($) command.
New in Ergo 0.11.3
- Fixed problem in the distribution of 0.11.2 that prevented the game board buttons from functioning.
New in Ergo 0.11.2
- Several dialogs, including Help -> About Ergo, had a serious bug which caused Ergo to hang. I have put in
a quick workaround for the problem and will fix it for real later.
- Several small changes to improve use in a web browser, and how the files are distributed.
New in Ergo 0.10
- Improved game browsing panel.
- Image buttons
- Forward/back to next kibitz buttons
- Forward/back to next branch buttons
- Click right on forward/back buttons to jump forward/back
- Fteach games are recognized correctly and allow you to play both colors. (NNGS only. IGS doesn't have
this feature.)
- The font in the "games" and "who" windows is now settable with the "info window font"
property in the init file.
- Ergo now works in some web browsers. Try it.
- Komi is set correctly when it is modified in a game you're observing. (NNGS only. IGS doesn't have
this feature.)
- SGF improvements:
- Kibitzes are stored with the correct move in loaded SGF games. (They used to be stored with the previous
move.)
- Can now read files containing more than one game (game collections).
- Should now report invalid SGF files in a semi-reasonable way.
- Saves captured territory in SGF file.
- The "look" command now works.
- Kibitzing improvements:
- The output of the "say" command is now stored as a kibitz.
- New command: "localkibitz" (lkib or $ for short) to add a kibitz to the current move while browsing,
without sending it to the server. Can be used to review games while the game is still in progress.
- The Variations menu in the game window works again.
- Scoring mode improvements:
- Popup menu (click the Right mouse button on a dead group) offers to remove that group and all others of the
same color in the same territory, since they must also be dead. Greatly speeds scoring, but use it carefully!
If the territory isn't fully enclosed you'll get a surprise.
- Undo works while scoring a game on the server.
- Bugs relating to browsing in scoring mode have been fixed.
New in Ergo 0.9
- SGF Text properties (for example kibitzes) are written with the correct character escaping. (e.g., "[2k]"
is now written as "[2k\]".)
- The game result (the scoring determined by the server) is displayed correctly after both players type "done".
- User options such as login name, password, window size and placement are saved in the Ergo init file and restored
next time Ergo is started up.
- Improvements to how kibitzes are stored and displayed.
- A connection dialog is provided so that if connecting to the server takes to long you can cancel it rather
than just waiting, or having to exit Ergo.
- Scoring mode is entered and exited automatically, based on what moves are played (e.g., two PASS moves) or
undone. Local scoring variations are removed from the game tree after scoring mode is exited.
New in Ergo 0.8
- Scoring of server games now works correctly. There was a bug that prevented the user from clicking on
groups to remove them if it wasn't his/her turn.
- SGF file reading. Use the File > Load Game menu item. Not all SGF properties are preserved correctly
yet, but basic game tree editing should work fine.
- SGF file writing bug fixes. (Ergo files should now be readable by WinIGC.)
- Command history. Use the up/down arrow keys to access history.
- Better command-line arguments mean you don't have to start Ergo from a specific directory.
- Dialogs are positioned better.
- Many other small bug fixes.
New in Ergo 0.7
- Java 1.0 is no longer supported. It was just too much of a pain in the ass. If you don't do Java
development we suggest you get the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) since it's the smallest package you can get to
run Java programs.
- New "games" window shows a sortable list of games and provides a mouse interface to observe any game.
- New "who" window shows a sortable list of players and lets you perform commands on any player by
clicking with the mouse.
- Improvements to login procedure:
- Password is never displayed upon login.
- Login works correctly even if client mode is toggled off initially.
- Lines in help files which begin with a number are displayed correctly. The number used to be stripped
off.
- Invalid passwords are handled correctly, redisplaying the login dialog.
- The login dialog's Cancel button now closes the connection.
- Entering a password is no longer required (e.g., to login as guest)
- Improvements to the main window
- No longer has a limit on the amount of text (the history) that can be displayed.
- Wraps at word boundaries.
- Unfortunately this means the loss of Cut and Paste ability (for a little while).
- The About Ergo dialog is fixed.
- Move numbers now begin at 1 instead of 0.
- Games of Unusual Size now have the correct coordinates (up to size 52x52, the maximum allowed by the SGF[4]
standard) and the hoshi points are drawn in reasonable locations.
- Ergo prompts to save a game before closing it. See the option "game-window-prompt-for-save"
in the Ergo.ini file.
- Popup menus on the game board allow browsing back to a specific board position.
- Some rudimentary sound has been added. There is an optional bell when moves are placed. This will
eventually be changed to a realistic sound.
- You may customize the fonts used. See the new Ergo.ini file for details.
- The game board now has a nicer status display. (The previous display is now an option.)
- Game windows have a kibitz pane for the display of kibitzes, and an input area where you can enter commands.
If you kibitz a game from that game's window Ergo will be able to add your kibitz to the game record even if you
don't specify a game number. If you kibitz from the main window Ergo has no way of knowing which game the
kibitz was intended for unless you specify it.
- The ko position is now displayed in the game window status area instead of in the main window.
